[Philmont] Selecting a Crew Leader

2) We have a reading impaired scout who is nearly a
Life Scout, a good leader, and IMHO would make an excellent
Crew Leader. Question: Does his reading impairment issue
prevent him from being a candidate for Crew Leader?

  *****************************************************

OK, first off the crew leader is the crew leader, not the crew reader or navigator.

You have already stated that he is a good leader, he's made it to Life Scout which demonstrates his understanding and application of Scout skills and his leadership ability.

With a reading impairment he probably has to work harder than most and that is what a good leader does to start with. If selected by his crew, they will respect him for workign around his impairment. That could even be a plus as a leader.

A good leader isn't necesarily the smartest or fastest learner of the group.

To disqualify him as crew leader would be strictly a discrimination against him. If he is trusted by the crew and elected as their leader, give him whatever assistance he needs. He probably won't need any.

A Philmont crew is about learning to get along and do a task, not how fast or how quick the crew can do it.

From a public school science teacher with fifteen years experience dealing with many impairments in students, you are worrying about something that you don't even need to worry about which is OK, but just don't let it even factor in.

Concentrate on team building skills instead of the nitty gritty of how many ounces of water to add to how many ounces of food and how many minutes to heat thje water, etc, etc, etc.

  One more time.

Let the crew select the leader of their choice and concentrate on team building and problem solvingand the crew will be better off for it.

They don't need to select a crew leader for another six months.

Selected at the end of April, that gives at least a couple of months for him to "practice".

In the mean time, encourage personal fitness. That is what takes months to see improvements.
