Did a hike there back in the early seventies before they were 'discovered'.
The Troop had to work out our plan with the rangers to hike between
established camp areas as there weren't any trails at that time. Two
memorable events: hiking over Mt. Scott during the heat of the day (we went
the 4th of July and the temp at 6:00 pm was 100) and hiking through a
buffalo herd. To go around would have been at least 2 additional miles, so
we spread out, kept our distance from the buffalo - especially cows with
calves - and we didn't have any problem. The next morning the herd grazed
through our camp. I was setting on my sleeping bag and a buffalo came
within 10 feet, looked at me and went its way. It really was a neat
experience.
To this day I wonder if we really didn't present any threat and so the
buffalo ignored us, or if we were just lucky.

The Wichita Mountains near Lawton Okla is where most Troops from Texas go
when they want some rugged rock climbing. Not all that high, but good
climbing areas.
