Any day at Goshen Scout Reservation is a good day.
Lenhok'sin (the name means moccasin) is a Sunday to Saturday camp -- Monday to Friday on the trail. Except for a canoe trek on the James River, the programs involve backpacking around Goshen Scout Reservation and the surrounding area. GSR sits in a valley between two mountain ridges (in the 2000 - 3000 ft. range), with a 400+ acre lake in the middle. Surrounding the lake are three Boy Scout camps, two Webelos camps, reservation headquarters (with nearby COPE and climbing tower), and Camp Baird, the base for Lenhok'sin High Adventure. While the Scouts in the regular camps see little more than their own camps and the lake, Lenhok'sin takes participants up into the woods and hills behind. Meals are backpacking food provided by the camp. Outposts are scattered around the reservation, and crews will normally backpack from outpost to outpost in the morning, and participate in outpost activities in the afternoon. There are five "peaks," or high points, and some crews will try to get them all during their trek. As previously mentioned, you can do as many or as few miles as your crew would like. While not a lot of height, there is plenty of up-and-down to challenge the legs and lungs, and the beauty of Allegheny woodlands to soothe the soul. My favorite "outpost" was none at all -- our "Primitive" day, when we did a long and leisurely circuit hike (without packs) up to one of the peaks and back along a ridgetop trail.
The outposts (and, as noted, their quality) will vary somewhat from summer to summer based on staff. Since some positions may not be filled until spring, it is a good idea to stay in regular contact with the National Capital Area Council Camping office to confirm that the programs you are signed up for are "on."
