Joe,

The crews set on on Monday morning for their week of hiking.? During that week, they hike from outpost to outpost (or from primitive camp to primitive camp).? They select their own routes (and file a hiking plan with the Lenhok'sin staff).? They must check into the outpost by 5 PM each day (and not before 1) and must check out by 9 AM.? At most outposts, they camp in their own tents, with dining flys provided.? At Civil War, you have the option of staying in the "encampment" tents, which make you appreciate the bug barriers and screens in your own tents.? Water at outposts is generally from natural sources and needs to be treated.?

On the primitive day(s), they can do anything they want--swim in one of the rivers, hike in the adjacent national forest, stop by a regular boy scout camp or Camp Baird and take showers, etc., but do not do "program" on those days.? To earn the end of camp "Trailblazer" award, a crew must hike 2 peaks, hike 20 miles, check in and out on time, and do a 2-3 hour service project, and hike and camp in accordance with leave no trace and safety guidelines.? In the past, this was a Sunday to Sunday camp, and return to base camp was on Saturday, with a campfire that evening to present the trailblazer awards.? Don't know if you return on Friday now, or on Sat am.? My guess is the former.? Other new inovations allow crews to select an outdoor living history outpost for the entire week--Mountain Man and Civil War, which reduces the hiking part of the program--the part my crew has always enjoyed.??

There are some beautiful views from?some of the peaks--Jump Rock,?Forge Rock, and Viewing Rock in particular.??

My crew enjoys camping and hiking and that--coupled with the low cost and relative ease of getting a reservation--has made Lenhok'sin a hit.? We've done Sea Base's out island program 2 times, Philmont once, and Sea Base's SCUBA program once, and are headed back to Philmont this summer.? While the crew wants to return to Munson Island in 2010, we'll probably make our 6th trip to Len'hoksin in 2009.? At 25-30% of the cost of Philmont or SeaBase, it's a great deal.? I expect to have a couple of crew members on staff there this summer, perhaps with the COPE and climbing program.

Crew 574
