For a campsite slow cooker on a layover day, check out the "bean hole" in the 1967 edition of the Fieldbook, p. 172-3. A hole is dug, 1 1/2 times the size of the pot, and lined with flat, non-exposive stones. Build a large fire to heat the stones, scoop out the embers, put in the pot with tight fitting lid, bail up, replace the embers, and bury for 6 to eight hours. Dig up, lift lid carefully, and enjoy.
Good for pot roasts as well as beans.
I've always wanted to try this, since I first read about it as a Scout in the 1960's. If I ever do, I'll post a full report (I would use bricks rather than stones).
