A single use round aluminum cake pan or circle cut from a aluminum oven
liner or similar material might be a bit more durable at a negligible weight
increase - especially if you carry several sheets of foil as backups.
Either one could roll/fold up for storage inside the pot for travel.
As to the diffuser plate - either the Outback Oven or Backpacker (maybe
both) has/had a diffuser plate to spread the flame over the bottom of the
cooker, and you could purchase replacements. I have a couple - one for my
backpacking stoves and one stays in my personal camping kitchen kit. I
think they work pretty well, particularly in windier conditions where you
need the burner up a little higher to keep from blowing out. They also help
keep younger Scouts from burning a hole through the bottom of a pan on their
first campout too.
Our Troop did the bean-hole thing when I was a Scout and it works pretty
well IF you are careful when you unearth the pot and don't dig off the lid.
The results are not real tasty, but the lesson is well learned. Definitely
need to get permission for this one because it's not exactly a LNT type
activity and I'm pretty sure Philmont wouldn't go for crews digging holes
all over the ranch.
Happy Trails,
Roy Fisher

We used Heavy Duty alum foil as lids - the frying pans are way too heavy.
