I knew there was sumpin I liked about this Sheehan fellow even though he is a yankee. It's his invoation and reading the back issues of Scouting publications.

Bean Hole Beans have always intrigued me even though it wsa a Yankee idea.

Well, I've been there done that and it's a cool way to cook in the outdoors.

Like I've said before at Philmont and most all BSA camps back in the 40's and 50's cooking a meal WAS the program.

Now lemme plug for us Southerners. We call it a Cajun Microwave. Make them out of whatever scraps of wood and tin we can rummage up and it works.

And sometimes we just build a fire in a hole in the ground anc cook the whole pig slow like. Delicious!

If they don't seel what you need, make it for pete sakes.

And leave then turkey bags in momas kitchen! YOu wanna be a man or a mouse?

For a campsite slow cooker on a layover day, check out the "bean hole" in the 1967 edition of the Fieldbook, p. 172-3. A hole is dug, 1 1/2 times the size of the pot, and lined with flat, non-exposive stones. Build a large fire to heat the stones, scoop out the embers, put in the pot with tight fitting lid, bail up, replace the embers, and bury for 6 to eight hours. Dig up, lift lid carefully, and enjoy.

Good for pot roasts as well as beans.

I've always wanted to try this, since I first read about it as a Scout in the 1960's. If I ever do, I'll post a full report (I would use bricks rather than stones).
