I would agree that it is impossible to satisfy everyone with a single food selection. (I can't even manage this at home with 3 teenagers.) However, there was so much food offered in each meal this summer that the kids could pick and choose or swap for what they wanted. They also saved oatmeal (who has time to boil water in the morning???) and ate it for dinner if they didn't like the featured meal. We asked who wanted what before cooking, so we wouldn't have too much leftover cooked food that had to be eaten. As for the cooked meals, spaghetti and turkey tetrazzini were our favorites. Our kids hated the beans and rice, but we met other groups (probably from the southwest!) who chose that as their favorite. Good luck.

The best use of one that I saw was at the branding pit. What a great
souvenir that one became after the Philmont brand was applied.

  Pemmican bars.

Well, Philmont does not issue "Pemmican Bars" per se (they used to), but if the term "Pemmican Bars" is used to generically describe food/energy bars, then they do. They vary with meal and a variety of commercial bars are used.

Depending on individual taste, some are considered great and some not so great and some said to be (although I did not find it so) downright nasty. As an adult I never found any to be that.

If any of todays youth had eaten any REAL pemmican bars made of crushed berries, nuts, suit and dried meat and ground together and pressed firmlyninto a bar the sonsistancy and looks of bear poop, then a new level of nasty would be understood.

Those of us who have tasted these morsels think of all of todays energy bars as....................candy!

I just rummaged through my small assortment of PhilFood leftover from our trek this summer. I am hording it for those cold winter nights when I need a taste of Philmont to help me make it through the night.

What is left in there are the following with comments.

Nature Valley Chrunchy Granola Bar Maple and Brown Sugar---nice to munch on

Nature Valley Trail Mix Fruit and Nut-------OK, but not a favorite of anyone

Power Bar Vanilla Crisp--------my favorite tasting and very popular with most youth

Boulder Bar Peanut Butter------pretty good to nibble on while hiking

Bear Valley Coconut Almond MealPack------I bet you can't eat the whole thing at one sitting! It's a heafty double handful of food.

Gatoraide brand which do not taste like Gatoraide and of which I don't have any left.

The kids seemed to like the Power Bars and Nature Valley bars the most. About half liked the Boulder Bars and very few liked the MealPack. About half complained that the Gatoraide bars were "nasty", the other half gobbled up the first halfs supply.

I sort of enjoyed them and could make it all day long without lunch on one MealPack bar.

Like it has been said before, it is strictly up to the individual. If you want to get the ones which kids like, then save yourself the effort amd just shoot yourself first.

The only way to satisfy all on trek is to let them all buy their own and then you will hear "but I thought..........."

One last comment is my daughter (15 years old) ate every one of them on trek in July with no complaints. Her favorite energy bar is Luna Bar Nutz Over Chocolate. She hords a stash of these for our local hikes, bike rides and kayak excursions.

As to the entire menu, if someone complains of not getting enough food or the food was bad, then my opinion of them is they are a born liar or else just sharing lip service. Neither is factual.

PhilFood was great in 2002 and plenty of it!
