I have three Whisperlites that we took to Philmont in and to several other
high adventure trips.
I purchased these in 1985 and they have had a lot of use. I made the
mistake of loaning them out to another crew which managed to destroy all
three pumps. So I am buying new pumps a refurbishing them and they will be
good as new.
I looked at and tried several other stoves and haven't found anything that
offers allthe features of my old Whisperlites.

Personally, I would, but I'm very risk tolerant. I've also had a lot of
luck on Ebay, I've made a ton of purchases and have only had a handful of
problems with unsavory sellers, not with actual products. That said, new
whisperlites are pretty cheap, and whether the risk is worth the savings?
Well, if there is a problem, you can get a stove repair kit from MSR that
someone handy should be able to handle.

I wouldn't buy a Peak1, I've been very happy with my Whisperlite, so I'd pay
MSRP unless I could find it cheaper :-). As you are no doubt aware, the lack
of adjustment on heat level bothers some people, but, so far, I've never
made anything for which it was a problem.

Not here, I'm afraid.
You may want to consider gorptrade.com (they don't have any whisperlites or
peak1's at the moment), its more actual users of the products so they seem
more reliable than ebay, I've not had any problems with acquisitions through
that route either (or Backpacker's GearXchange, which is actually the same
database).
My recommendation is that if you are forced to acquire stoves, try to get
all the same model so that if you do have problems you have spare parts.
Since you need three stoves, getting them on ebay may be worthwhile since
you should be confident that if you buy three you'll at least get two
working stoves.
