My young crew leader found a great product for dry storage before we sent to
Philmont (728J3). Ziploc makes a product called Heavy Duty Big Bags. Each
bag is 13"x14", about 2-1/4 gallons. I provided each of our crewmembers
with one of these for personal smellables in our bear bags. Putting film,
cameras, medications, chapstick, etc. in these ensure they'd remain dry
while hanging, despite rain. I also carried extras for smellable clothing
that needed hanging at night (food spills, etc.). These bags allowed
everyone to keep stuff separate from everyone elses stuff and made it easy
to prep stuff to hang--each crewmember stuffed his or her own bag and then
threw it into the personal smellable bear bag. Easy to retrieve our own
stuff in the morning, too. I also carried my campshoes in them in the pack,
keeping wet/mud/dirt from shoes off the rest of my clothing.
We found them at WalMart in the camping section, 8 bags to a package for
about $7--much cheaper than buying a waterproof dry-bag for those who are
budget-driven or who aren't sure they'll continue backpacking. I haven't
found this product on Ziploc's website (www.ziploc.com) and received no
response from Ziploc when I e-mailed a question. If anyone wants more info,
let me know and I'll send barcode or other info.
Jon
