Don Roberts asked:

<<Our trek date is August 8, 2003....

<<If we want to take the train, I understand we must board (in So. Calif.)
on
the evening of August 6, 2003 to arrive the evening of August 7, 2003
(whenever the train *actually* pulls in), take the Philbus from Raton to CHQ
and (after making reservations) spend the night in tent city, to be bright
an early to check in 8am on our trek date of August 8, 2003.

<snip>

<<Does that mean we spend only 10 nights on the trail, hiking into CHQ on
August 18? Then spend the night of August 18 in tent city again, to have
August 19 as our actual travel date?>>

You've got the front end right, Don. That's just what our troop has done on
our last few treks (we're also based in southern California). Leave two days
before your official check-in date (August 6 for an August 8 check-in),
arrive in Raton the evening before your scheduled arrival, and get bused to
tent city. Philmont will charge you $12 extra for the additional night plus
breakfast.

You'll spend all of your official check-in day (August 8) at Camping
Headquarters going through your check-in process. This will take most of the
day, ending with a welcoming campfire that evening.

The next morning (August 9), you'll be bused to a trailhead to begin your
trek.

It sounds like you have a short trek, so I'm not sure about the check-out
dates -- it should say on your Philmont paperwork. But yes, you will return
to tent city the day BEFORE your scheduled check-out date, return gear,
shower (huzzah!), eat at the dining hall or in town, attend a closing
campfire, then spend the night at tent city. You will check out the morning
of your official check-out date and take the bus to Raton to catch the train
around 11:00 a.m. Arrival in Los Angeles is scheduled for around 9:00 a.m.
the following day.

We're going to be arriving for our trek on August 10, and departing August
19, so we'll probably see you in base camp the last day, if not on the
trail. We might even ride home together if our crew decides to take the
train (though there is some interest in flying instead). Here's how our
schedule looks, assuming we take the train:

Friday, August 8, 2003: Depart L.A. Union Train Station at approximately 7
p.m.
Saturday, August 9: Arrive Ration, New Mexico, approximately 5 p.m. We will
be picked up by a Philmont bus for the one-hour ride to camp.
Sunday, August 10: Official check-in and orientation.
Monday, August 11: Hit the trail
Monday, August 18: Return to base camp
Tuesday, August 19: Check out, take bus to Raton. Board train 11 a.m.
Wednesday, August 20: Arrive in Los Angeles approximately 9 a.m.

Hope that's helpful. See you in God's Country!
