Now, the problem I have is the other end. As near as I can tell, the "12
day trek" actually includes as day 1 the check in date and a night in tent
city. So, does that mean we actually spend a night in tent city on August
8, to get on a bus to our trail head (wherever that may be) on August 9?
Does that mean we spend only 10 nights on the trail, hiking into CHQ on
August 18? Then spend the night of August 18 in tent city again, to have
August 19 as our actual travel date?
Answer...
Day 1 is the day you arrive at Philmont, the Opening Campfire is that night,
you will stay in the trailbound tent city, and sometime on Day 2 you will be
bused to the trailhead (turnaround).
Day 12 you will come off the trail, the Closing Campfire is that night, you
will stay in the homebound tent city, and depart sometime the following day.
That is 12 nights (10 on the trail, 2 in CHQ) at Philmont. If you arrive on
the 8th (Day 1), you depart August 20, 12 full days later.
Some people in referring to their treks call the first day on the trail Day
1. However, in the TREKS booklet, that is Day 2 (always Ranger Training at
a trail camp).
