Jeff, you really know how to kick an anthill full of fireants.....
I agree that most of the rangers I met were not Boy Scouts. Our ranger was a
young man from MIT who was going to the negineering college. We were only
his second crew. At the end of the summer, we got a letter from him. He
thanked the entire crew for being patient with him. He also said he
appreciated us teaching him things he needed to know. Our troop is pretty
active, and we spend lots of time out on the trail hiking and camping. He
taught us many things, and we taught him some. It was a win / win situation
for both parties. I only met one staffer the entire time I was at Philmont
that I did not like / think he did a good job. Everyone esle exceeded my
expectations. BTW, the person that disapointed me was part of my exit
review. I heard from another staffer he was let go before the summer was up.
Several other people must have felt the same way.
My son was fortunate enough to make an Order of the Arrow Trail crew this
past summer, and he is applying for Rayado in 2003. He has already told me
he would love to be a ranger as soon as he turns 18. He will make me proud
when he makes that goal.
