RE: [Philmont]: Problems with Ranger Recruiting

Yes, during the 2001-2002 "off season" there indeed was a problem in the
Ranger dept. due to unplanned personnel issues, that drastically delayed
all hiring in the Ranger department. "Normally" the Ranger upper
leadership are hired (selected by the Chief Ranger & confirmed by
Philmont permanent staff) and are working at selecting other staff by
around Thanksgiving. It wasn't until the New Year's reunion weekend
that some of the staff who applied for leadership positions learned that
no hiring had happened yet in the Ranger dept due to a late resignation
of the originally hired Chief Ranger. Even some of those who had been
in Ranger leadership in the past were thinking they were not going to be
hired because it was way, way past the normal time to hear anything, so
you can imagine the snow-ball effect this had on all hiring in that
dept. The new Chief Ranger, hired around New Year's had to do much
scrambling when he was already a couple of months behind schedule
stepping into a position he hadn't been planning on incorporating into
his life, so the thought-processes that go along with being Chief Ranger
had to begin from scratch. In previous seasons, contracts for Rangers
were being received around mid-Feb. to first of March. I would not
expect the problems of the '02 summer to be a repeating factor.

... So it appears that the Ranch has a problem here - and on the surface
of
it, an unnecessary and perplexing one. I invite those more in the know
than I to comment....
