I have been Scoutmaster for about 8 years and am
interested in attending one of the Scoutmaster
Training sessions next summer. What do I need to
know?

I attended the "Strictly for Scoutmasters" conference at
the PTC in 1999. It was one of the best training
experience in which I've participated. The highlight for
me was the various "breakout" sessions during which we
were grouped with Scoutmasters of similar sized troops.
I also brought back lots of handouts and ideas that have
been useful to my troop during the past three years.

My wife is interested in going also, so I need to know
what the accomadations and schedule are like so that we
can determine if it would be worthwhile for her to come
with me.

My wife, very involved in Scouting, took a "vacation"
that week and attended the spouses program. She had a
great time. In addition to the links to Don Robert's
reports on various aspects of the PTC, here is a link to
a very comprehensive report written by one of our
adults.

Also, where is the best place to fly in to and get a
rental car? Any tips on what to do and see while we
are there would also be appreciated.

Colorado Springs, Denver and Albuquerque are your
choices. In 1995, our two crews flew into Albuquerque
and took a bus to Philmont. The trip from Colorado
Springs or Denver is probably more scenic than from
Albuquerque.

One of my favorite places is the Seton Memorial Library
& Museum at Philmont. A tour of the Villa Philmonte is
included in the spouse's program. Be sure to visit the
Old Mill Museum in Cimarron. Also, the Cimarron Art
Gallery and the other shops in Cimarron are nice places
to visit. Two of my favorite places are Simple Simon's
Pizza for lunch and the Cree-Mee for soft serve ice
cream.

If you want to have a very special trip, go a day or two
early and stay at the Casa Del Gavilan bed and breakfast
which is near Philmont's CHQ.
