Dennis:

Costs for pre-trek travel can vary greatly, it is all dependant upon how
many days you attach to the front and back of your trek, how much of a
tourist you plan on being, and how much of the planning you will be involved
in versus a travel agent. In 2002, we were looking at costs of
approximately 1300.00/trekker for the entire Philmont experience. This
included airfare from the east coast to Colorado Springs, two days of
tourist options (air force academy, flying w ranch, pikes peak cog railway,
cave of the winds), two 15 passenger vans for local travel, a coach bus
(with bathroom and tv/vcr) for the 4 hour trip to/from Philmont), meals and
motel rooms.

We were one of the troops who planned to use the now dissolved adventure
trails, but when the troop committee heard about was going on, they pulled
the plug on using that agent. With some scrambling, I was able to duplicate
the most of the trip that AT had mapped out for us for $1,120/trekker. I
could have further reduced costs by staying at youth hostels or similar
lower tier accommodations, but chose the comfort of a bed over a mat and
floor.

Frank:

We are headed for Philmont in '04. Can you shed some light on the cost of
this pre-trek travel? Thanks.
