Since we couldnt train at altitudes above 2,000 feet we were afraid we
d be at a disadvantage at Philmont. During our training we carried
fairly heavy packs it turns out they were heavier than what we carried
at Philmont and hiked 9 plus miles most days on hilly terrain.
At Philmont our longest day was 8 miles. We each carried 4 liters of
water and drank often. It turned out that several of us had dull
headaches at the end of the first day of hiking at over 7,000 ft. Some
headaches cleared up over night and a few others had them for another
day. One of our adults felt nauseous, but was still able to fully
participate. No one got severely ill.
So in your training, carry heavier packs than you hope to have at
Philmont (filling them with bottles of water works well) and hike
longer distances to push your body as much as you can.
