I like to use the MSR Dragonfly stove with the scouts as it has a very study
base and can simmer, things that my trusty whisperlite cannot do. While the
stove roars like a jet plane, I find that to be a safety factor both because
the non-cooks know that they should stay away and the cooks have some idea
of how much heat it is making.
My MSR Dragonfly stove pump failed while I was at Philmont this summer.
While one of the crew was preparing to cook the two tabs that lock the
plunger into the pump broke off. This allows the plunger to be pulled out
of the pump. It can still be used but extra care is needed. This seems to
be a common problem with the pump. I've never had it happen with my
wisperlite
I used it again this weekend and decided that I needed to get it fixed. The
replacement pump is $29 at REI. I called them about a repair and they gave
me the toll free number for MSR customer service, 800-877-9677. They are
open weekdays 8am-430pm Pacific time.
The MSR (Cascade Designs) customer rep said that they had a new design for
the pump that would be shipped early next year. They gave me a return
authorization for my pump and will give me a new pump (old design) in
exchange. After the new year I am to call in again and get an authorization
to exchange that pump for one of the new design.
Take it easy on your pump for the rest of the year then call MSR and ask for
an exchange for the new (and stronger) pump.
