I'm curious, did any of the other east coast crews experience
nose bleeds at Philmont? We had four cases of severe nose bleeds,
probably due to elevation, exertion and low humidity. A daily
application of a small amount of triple antibiotic ointment solved
the problem.
Four scouts in our Virginia crew had nosebleeds during the first half of our
trip, one right after descending Pikes Peak on the way to Philmont, and the
rest in the vicinity of Baldy. We were giving multivitamins to the scouts,
and I dosed the bleeders with an extra gram each of vitamin C. Nobody had a
repeat episode. I don't know where I picked up that bit of pharmacopoeia,
but it worked well for us. I never did the Vaseline or antibiotic ointment
method.
