Forgot to mention these two important items.

Equipment:

You can go to Philmont wiht just your clothes and have a good trek on rented and issued equipment. I personally think there is entirely too much emphasis on what stuff a kid MUST HAVE - translation parents must buy _ to go to Philmont.

Yeah, I wore a pair of Aslo $135.00 boots, but the ones I buy to work in for $39.95 would have served me well also.

Rangers:

Get out of their way and let them work with the kids. They are trained on how to do that, they can do it objectively and do it well. Learn from them.

Our Ranger was a female college soccer player. She hiked in her soccer shoes. Her whole pack weighed less tham my tent and bedroll and she was a joy to behold. Our kids learned from her, she learned from our kids.

More importantly, when one of our advisors kept sticking his nose and mouth where it did not belong, she took him behind the bushes and in privacy .............well, lets just say that he came out a changed man! Life on the trail was better after that.

To boot, each morning she got up at 4AM and ran five miles BEFORE anyone else even woke up. Don't think that did not set an example for the kids to follow. They were early risers for the rest of the trek. My daughter still gets up early and runs. Thank you for the influence, Ranger Kelly.
