Consistent pattern of advice. The Principle seems to be: LET THE BOYS
DECIDE.
My advice would be to phocus on the ACTIVITIES the kids want to do
phirst. They need to be held accountable for their choices, good or bad
consequences come what may. (You don't want them to say, "Why did YOU
pick THIS itinerary?") Then match that against an itinerary that will
offer the physical challenge they seek. Assuming they WANT to be
challenged in that regard. Sometimes, as with my crew, they have all
had enough "kick-in-the-nuts" hikes on the AT, etc., that they don't
want to be "stretched" at Philmont. My guys were a relatively young
crew (14-15) and wanted some degree of challenge, but also enough time
to appreciate the experience, etc. We were all Philmont phirst-timers.
Now they all say they'd like to do another trek with longer distances,
but they were very pleased with the choice of trek THEY MADE.
Bottom Line: Let them pick the activities and the distance, but
challenge their thought process before they make the phinal choices.
Leading questions like, "You chose a trek with long hikes. That means
either early get-ups or late afternoon arrivals in camp. Are y'all OK
with that?"
