In response to your question about the benefit of doing more than one peak,
I can say that it is personal preference. Having said that, I can tell you
that looking back and forward from some of the peaks to the mountains we had
been on and were going to really put the our trek into perspective. The
boys were astonished at how far they'd come and the terain that they were
going to tackle.

Subject: Re: [Philmont]: A big THANK YOU... and a few more questions.
To all who have answered my initial request for information on Philmont.....
A great big Scouting thank you to all of you!! (As I type this, another
response just popped into my Inbox).
On one hand, I shouldn't be surprised at the response. Scouters are the
finest people around and will give the shirt off their back to help another
Scouter, especially in a situation like this where I'm looking for
information well in advance of our trek.
On the other hand, I really can't believe the number of responses and the
fantastic advice and suggestions. You all are truly great!
In response to several of you, yes, the boys will be making the decisions.
The adults on the trek will be there as advisors to steer things along, but
the trip will most definitely be boy-led. Several of the boys in our crew
have planned trips to Northern Tier and other high adventure-type outings
and know the routine. The ones who haven't done as much will quickly
understand.
I'm especially pleased at all the information on Philmont program. Quite
frankly, I didn't realize the depth of the activities the boys would have
the opportunity to do after hiking. This will truly be exciting for them
(and us!) (Another response just popped into my e-mail Inbox while I've
been typing. You guys are great!!!)
At first glance, if I read you all correctly, a crew hiking Philmont will
have the opportunity to hike one or more of the major peaks (i.e. Tooth of
Time, Phillips, Baldy, etc.) Does it make any sense to try and do more than
one or two? Would we really WANT to do more than two? With all the
program, maybe one is enough? I'm really firing question blindly here, but
I would think the peaks would be among the highlights of any trek.
Thanks for the info regarding horseback riding. Unless the guys are
adament, we'll steer toward another activity.
And a couple of you asked me to e-mail you. I didn't notice any e-mail
address to use so I'll pass along mine for you to use. All correspondence
is appreciated.
Yours in Scouting,
