At first glance, if I read you all correctly, a crew hiking Philmont
will have the opportunity to hike one or more of the major peaks (i.e.
Tooth of Time, Phillips, Baldy, etc.) Does it make any sense to try and
do more than one or two? Would we really WANT to do more than two?
With all the program, maybe one is enough? I'm really firing question
blindly here, but I would think the peaks would be among the highlights
of any trek

Pete, go to http://www.danyoder.com <http://www.danyoder.com> and look
at the itineraries for 2004. This should give you an idea of what was
available this year. There will be some changes for next year (Carson
Meadows should be a staff camp by then, Search and Rescue, I think). But
this will give you an idea of the options. You don't 'pick mountain's
you pick an itinerary with the mountains or staff camps on it you want.
My favorites were Apache Springs, and Cyphers mine, in both cases
because of the staff. My favorite trail camps were Carson Meadows (what
a beautiful place!) and Mt. Phillips (we ate breakfast on the peak, 2
minutes from out tents, and watched the sun come up).
No matter what you pick, you are in for a great time, just make sure
your crew has enough practice working as a team. When you hit day 7 or
so, this will show, one way or the other. I watched one crew on their
last day that was spread over a half mile or more of trail. When I asked
one Scout where the rest of his crew was, he said "Well, we have some
morale issues". 2 weeks later I'm sitting here and thinking of that
Scout and wondering if he came home telling folks that he had a great
time, or that he survived it. I guess I'll never know.
I know that you know that preparation is key. Since I've returned from
my first trek, my perspective has changed significantly on what to
prepare the crew for, both boys and adults.
 Happy trekking,
 Tom
