One other related point I have been thinking about is pre-trek prep: The
adults NEED physical training, most of the boys really don't. The training trips
should stress procedure, getting used to the gear, cooking, and most
important: WORKING AS A TEAM. This is where it matters, not the mileage.

We found a weekend COPE course to be a very effective teambuilding event in
the Spring before our trek. Not only did we all have fun, the low COPE
teambuilding elements showed the youth who was a team player and who wasn't. That
was a valuable insight before we hit the trail. It allowed the crew chief
and his assistant to manage the duty roster around an independent, impulsive
(poster child for ADHD with a big H) crew members. It also showed the boys
the potential for injury when impulse and independence went to extremes.

We 2 advisors were glad our 11-person crew was boy-led.
