I was hauling way too much first aid gear and only used the triple
antibiotic ointment, moleskin, duct tape, and band-aids.
I agree. Had the same experience in 2003 on our trek. First aid kit didn't
get much lighter one band-aid at a time and one triple antibiotic ointment
packet at a time. We ran short of gauze pads and adhesive tape for blister
protection. We had some off-brand band-aids donated and learned on the trail
that they didn't stick very well. Advice: try out your supplies before you
leave home. Also, if you plan to use duct tape as part of your first aid kit,
test it on everyone to see if anyone is allergic to the adhesive. A small
patch of duct tape directly on the skin for 24 hours should suffice.
We unexpectedly went through a lot of our gauze pads with one scout who had
severe nosebleeds each day. Trading posts did not stock packages of gauze
pads in 2003. Gauze pads were sold as part of blister kits which included a lot
of extra stuff we didn't need at $6 or $7/package. Good news: we didn't
need all our first aid supplies; bad news, "we" had to carry all that first aid
gear through the trek.
