Thanks Coop and T.C,
Your advice is sound. T.C. thanks for the invitation. Normally I never
pass up an excuse to go to Texas so I can visit family while there, but
in this case I need to let it slide. I've used all my vacation time and
funds for Scouting this year. My boss (although sympathetic) would not
understand it, and my wife would question the expense (especially just
after going to Philmont on short notice).
Coop, I hope National takes you up on your suggestion. At Philmont I
talked to a lot of advisors who had either taken the SOLO, WFA, or ARC
Wilderness First Aid courses. They all enjoyed them and were glad they
went, I was jealous. I live in the Catskill Mountains, and the only
course I can find that is within daily commuting range is a Wilderness
First Responder. This is a six week course, done in the snow at a local
ski center. Although it is QUITE pricey (because I am not on the ski
patrol and not in the fire department) I would still like to go, but I
can't put Troop activities on hold while I do it, and I can't do both.
The right thing to do is to get the local ARC to support the course. We
need to have this training available in this area. I am overcommitted to
too many things to do it myself. On this one, I'll have to settle for
being the facilitator.
None the less I thank you both for the push. Once the Troop gets
rolling for the season I'll make some spare time to get this moving. I
did have an ARC instructor for First aid tell me that she would love to
become certified and teach the course, so now I have to get the
administrative people at the ARC to make it happen. I'll get my Council
exec involved, that should help. There is an MOA between the BSA and the
ARC, I think it's time to hold them to it.
Happy Hiking,
 Tom
