We worked with them to get the ARC WFA course materials for the Atlanta Area
Council.
Under terms of the agreement between Red Cross and BSA early in 2003, each
Council has a designated Red Cross chapter to work with on administrative
matters, such as training.
The Atlanta Area Council has a liaison professional assigned from the Metro
Atlanta Chapter of the American Red Cross. A member of our Council Health &
Safety Committee is the primary point of contact for the Council.
We worked with our local Red Cross chapter's liaison to our council to
schedule the instructor training for 10 scouters (volunteers) early in 2003. That
was approx. 18 months ago. Since then, we 10 plus the Red Cross liaison
person have scheduled and taught the Red Cross WFAB weekend course in the autumn
of 2003 (35 people) and spring of 2004 (50 people). Next course is
scheduled October 2004. Without exception, participants enjoy and learn from the
scenarios we have developed based on the ARC training materials. Our course is
open to scouts (14 and older) and adult scouters. It runs all day Saturday
and thru mid-afternoon Sunday. It's a 16 hour course.
We are about to begin training our second group of scouters at Red Cross WFA
instructors. Training begins this month, subject to hurricane relief and
it's demands on Red Cross instructor personnel.
Sam Houston Council people have been excellent resources and
supporter/consultants to our program as well.
The WFA curriculum is being re-written by Transylvania Chapter, but we do
not expect to have the new course materials before yearend. We have heard the
new course will be 20 hours.
