MessageGood question!

Brought, didn't need: lip balm, plastic mirror, bug repellant, sunscreen
(even on the clearest days, the sun wasn't strong enough to need it...except
at lower elevations like 6-Mile Gate and in Base Camp. Although I'm
light-skinned, one of our scouts is more sensitive and applied it
religiously.)

Didn't bring, wished I had: third pair of socks (we also lacked good drying
weather the last half of our trek), my prescription sunglasses (got clip-ons
for my regular bifocals, they worked ok, especially when I suddenly wanted
to take a photo and could flip them up out of the way, but the clips
scratched my lenses and they didn't have the clarity of the better
sunglasses)

Didn't bring, didn't need: fleece gloves, thermal underwear, second fleece
pullover (I typically need it when temps go below 45, which was about the
coldest night on our North/Central trek this past July)

Wouldn't go without:
- trekking poles, and biker gloves to prevent hand blisters
- wide-brim hat
- spare map (the scouts "polished" their sectional until critical portions
near folds were missing or severely faded)
- pack cover (never used one before in favor of plastic bags inside the
pack. TOTT had several for $1 at a Sidewalk Sale before we left so I got
one. Torrential thunderstorms on Day 5 made a convert of me.)
- first aid kit (3 pounds, but Dr. Bob said it best - "This is no place to
go minimalist." Although I grumbled mentally at the weight, this, along with
my tent and some food, was my share of the crew's equipment.)

  Hi:

I'm curious about what gear you didn't use on your trek this year and what
items you needed but didn't have in your pack. Our Ranger wanted us to
leave our ski gloves at base camp. Most of the guys who did then wished
they had the gloves on cold mornings. I was hauling way too much first aid
gear and only used the triple antibiotic ointment, moleskin, duct tape, and
band-aids.

Coop's gear list is excellent and the only suggestion I have is to
strongly recommend hiking poles for all adults. They saved my bacon a bunch
of times, especially when hiking down the creek bottom from Black Mountain
to the North Fork Urraca trail camp.

  Best regards,

  Mick Meyer
