Look at scoutdirect.com. The Alps Mountaineering tents they have, in
particular the Mystique 2 with Aluminum poles, was a very good tent for me.
The Scouting discount is 45% off the Alps list price.
Also, the Exponent tents at Coleman, especially the Inyo 2 can be had for a
small amount of change (using the non-profit discount) and is a nice tent.
2 boys, one man fit nicely in both these tents. I would say the Mystique
rainfly is more impervious, but that also means it's a little heavier. The
Alps is under 5 pounds and the Coleman is close to 4. Coleman and a 1 man
variety, but it is small. Alps has a 1.5 variety, and having not seen it,
suspect it may be the optimum both in size and in weight if it truly is 3/4
the size of the 2.

Subject: [Philmont]: Christmas tents?
Christmas is just around the corner for families that need to buy gear for
Scouts and Scouters headed to Philmont.
Several crew parents have approached me about buying tents. I nearly had to
perform CPR after they looked at the prices for the ultralight gear their
trekkers are eyeing.
I was very uncomfortable in a MSR, 3lb, 2-man tent in 2002 that another
advisor brought. Four of our boys were in two Philmont tents, and did I
ever envy all that space. I'm leaning toward a Philmont tent for myself and
thinking about suggesting it for the entire crew.
