I would recommend using the Philmont tents unless the scouts are likely to continue backpacking in the future and need their own gear. If Philmont is a "one in a lifetime" opportunity, then save money and maximize what is included in the fee. Tents are included in the fee. They even rent backpacks, but those are more personal and fitting is important. But a Philmont trek can easily cost $2000 if boys are outfitted in new gear and that is a waste if it is not used regularly in the future.

Subject: [Philmont]: Christmas tents?
Christmas is just around the corner for families that need to buy gear for Scouts and Scouters headed to Philmont.
Several crew parents have approached me about buying tents. I nearly had to perform CPR after they looked at the prices for the ultralight gear their trekkers are eyeing.
I was very uncomfortable in a MSR, 3lb, 2-man tent in 2002 that another advisor brought. Four of our boys were in two Philmont tents, and did I ever envy all that space. I'm leaning toward a Philmont tent for myself and thinking about suggesting it for the entire crew.
