[Philmont]: Gear Check

Hi:

The ARC wilderness first aid class was excellent but one unintended side effect was that I took too much first aid gear to Philmont.

I added two sets of SAM splints and four Ace bandages to my first aid kit. Plus a large jar of Bag Balm. Those items were prudent on our warm-up hikes on the AT but I should have left them at home when we went to Philmont. Our Ranger said they rarely see a need for splints at Philmont.
Need time I'll just pack the recommended items in Coops list

One note of interest, the American Red Cross recommends using gauze (cling) for wrapping the SAM splints, but the wilderness first aid group recommends using ACE bandages on the SAM splits. Using the ACE bandages results in a much stronger and more supportive splint.

Best regards,

Mick Meyer
