As best I can tell, all of the unstaffed camps will have impure water, if
they have water at all. Staffed camps have a water source, typically, and
many are pure, but not all. You have to be able to purify water.
That said, we used both filter and polar pure. I was heck-bent on using the
filter because I didn't want to deal with the iodine taste but, a funny
thing happened on the way to the forum. When the water was purified with
the polar pure, I discovered I really had a difficult time telling. Perhaps
it's because I let the water stand longer and perhaps I just don't have the
taste buds for it, but regardless, I was surprised. We relied on my pump
MUCH less than I thought we would and much more on the polar pure than I
expected. The reason to have a pump filter is when you run out of water and
you need it immediately. Dehydration sets in so quickly, if you are
backpacking through an area and run out of water, you need to replenish
drinkable water immediately, without waiting an hour for the polar pure to
work. Of course, planning to have enough water for the hike is better, but
just in case...
Word of warning: The "advertising" about great-tasting, sweet, delicious,
etc. water at Hunting Lodge is, well, just say truth in advertising does not
exist there. Don't drink that water (even though it is purified)! The
sulfur taste is so extreme it is practically undrinkable. If you are going
through that camp, treat it as a dry camp and only drink that stuff as a
last resort! You could smell the water a mile away and no amount of
Gatorade could cover it up.

Great information on tents so far. When we have our first crew meeting,
we'll take an inventory of what's available to us. Seems to me that, if
possible, one should use the Philmont gear since it's included in the price,
but we'll look into that as we prepare.
We were in the same boat (pun intended) when we attended Northern Tier last
year and utilized a few things of our own (including my own kevlar canoe),
but mostly used the base gear. The (perceived) slightly higher weight was
offset by the knowledge that our own gear wasn't at risk of getting damaged.
Fortunately, we didn't damage NT's gear, either.
The next question I have is regarding water filters / purifiers. I see
Philmont offers polar pure, but do most crews carry their own water filters?
I own two First Need purifiers that are great and am willing to bring them.
Assuming the water at the trail camps is good, how often does one need an
alternative water source along the trail?

> Money better spent would probably be on some good quality coated nylon
rain gear. Also, folks need to check out backpacks. Unless your troop has
been doing some serious backpacking, your son probably has a pack from
Webelos days that no longer fits him or has the volume capacity for a 10 day
trek, carrying crew gear and water. Wait until March or April to get boots
if they are needs. Most kids feet are growing so fast at this time in their
lives that a boot bought before Christmas may not fit when it is time for
Philmont. More good info is available in the Philmont Advisor's Guide, an
84 page unofficial document written with input from experienced advisors and
rangers.
