RE TENTS: Lots of experimenting on prep hikes, but we brought our own.
We do backpack a lot in the troop/crew so we'll use them plenty. 2 of
our boys used the Coleman Cobra (like the Inyo) and ended up with damp
feet from brushing against the low end. They started wrapping the end
of their bags with their rain jacket and stayed dry after that. 4 pounds
split b/t 2 boys makes it great for smaller trekkers. 2 adults? No
way, and one adult one boy (father/son) too cramped.

I carried a North Face Pebble. 5.8 lbs, not bad b/t 2 people, and lots
of room.

I was glad I had a free standing tent. I bought one and did not bring
my Cobra (NOT free standing), but the "horror stories" about destroying
tent stakes trying to get them into the ground did not happen. The
Inyo/Cobra is great for youths and very light and pretty inexpensive
thru Coleman non-profit. We were in North/Central, so it may be
different in the South.

RE FILTERS: We took one because we had heard if you are out and cannot
wait, you might want it. Never used it, but glad we had it just in
case.
