Re: [Philmont]:  Water filters / purifiers/tents

We brought our own REI half-dome + 2 tents to Philmont. We picked them up
for less than $90 at attic sales at REI, being careful to set them up before
purchase, as attic sale gear can't be returned. They weighed about 5 lbs, and
slept 2 comfortably. Only 2 stakes needed (and those were for the rain fly).
Only "leak" was someone who failed to close top vent in a sideways rain
storm. We've used these same tents for several years with no other problems.

Polar pure works, but you have to plan ahead. I ran out of water on one
very hot afternoon (and I carried 3.5 to 4 liters), and was glad to have our
sweetwater filter so I could drink immediately when we found a stream. We polar
pured less than a third of the time. No problems with filter clogs, as we
used a silt stopper pre-filter, and when possible, let the water settle in a
collapsible bucket before filtering. There is no one "right" way--it's what you
and your crew are comfortable with.
