Re: [Philmont] - Hunting Lodge Water

We passed through Hunting Lodge on the way to Webster Parks (trek 4) and the
water from the pump in front of the lodge had a very strong sulfur smell and
taste. It wasn't as tasty as advertised, but I drank about 3 liters of it
(just imagine someone burning match heads as you drink your water) and did not
need to be purified. I can see how some may feel it was unpalatable. We
left our pump in base camp and went strictly polar pure. We really got used to
any taste and I would advise using this method again. And be aware that what
they tell you in base camp may change on the trail. When we hit Cyphers,
their piping was busted and there was no purified water.
BTW - first time to Philmont this year and I want to thank this list for a
ton of great advice.

We camped at Hunting Lodge in 2001, yes there is a creek that runs through
near the camping area, however we also used the pump near the lodge, and not
the creek. We also passed through there in 2003, and once again used the same
pump. We had no problems with the water either time. If I remember correctly
the water there tasted pretty good. But maybe things have changed since we
were last there.

"Word of warning: The "advertising" about great-tasting, sweet, delicious,
etc. water at Hunting Lodge is, well, just say truth in advertising does not
exist there. Don't drink that water (even though it is purified)! The
sulfur taste is so extreme it is practically undrinkable. If you are going
through that camp, treat it as a dry camp and only drink that stuff as a
last resort! You could smell the water a mile away and no amount of
Gatorade could cover it up."

I've been through Hunting Lodge twice (1998 and 2004) and the water
was fine both times. Did anyone else have Joe's experience? The pump I
used was the one out the front door of the Lodge to the left about 100
feet. I've never camped at HL. Is there a water source in the tenting area
that's not so good?
