[Philmont]: New Gear

Couple of weeks ago I attended the Outdoor Retailer trade show, the industry
show to show retailers next year's gear. To be honest, there is not much to
report.

Several new solar panel light combinations. Not a backpacking item but new
stuff. LED headlamps are taking over and the really make sense now. The
software makes them pretty efficient and bright if you need one. I'm
leaving my old halogen bulbs behind in the future. There are also some
headlamps where you can turn off the LED and switch to a halogen bulb if
you need it.

Alps has some neat sleeping bag lines. They are still offering their scout
program so check them out.

Some new innovations in climbing harnesses. A couple that are slightly safer
for those who forget to double back the webbing through the harness. You might look for these if you are climbing a lot. They are based on the pull straps to close some stuff sacks. Pull both ends of the webbing and it tightens up.

Climbing shoes are coming down in price. Many are now made in China. They are very inexpensive compared to the past, however sizing is now all over the board. I would hesitate from buying climbing shoes on the net or mail order because of this.

The big news is Polar Pure is going to be out. In it's place is a katadyn product that has no iodine issues and does a good job. There may be some time issues, but I don't believe they will be much different than polar pure.
