RE: [Philmont]: Christmas tents?

My two cents on tents:
We used REI half domes. the nicest backpacking tents I have ever spent
a night in: TWO vestibules and TWO doors, so each occupant could get out
when he wanted without disturbing the other (too much) and your boots
and rain gear stayed out in the vestibule. Very cool!
These tents were purchased by one of the Troops participating in our
trek, they waited until they were on sale, and then with the group
discount (they bought 10 of them) they wound up paying just a bit over
$100.00 a piece for outstanding tents.
I'd say if this is too pricey, go with the Philtents, which looked very
roomy, but a little low, as mentioned before. Still, I agree with the
others, there are priorities. I place them in this order 1) Boots,
2)Raingear, 3) Pack, 4)Tent, 5) Crew tarp, then it trickles out from
there.
We brought our own crew tarps, sil-nylon 10 x 12 tarps at about 1.5
pounds each and used treking poles to hold them up. No problems all trek
and very light.
Happy Hiking,
Tom
