RE: [Philmont] - Hunting Lodge Water

As far as I know, the potable water available at most of the staffed
sites is "treated" water (contrary to what some belief, there is no
magic Philmont underground spring of fresh water). The treatment
facilities periodically go out of wack and overtreat the water,
resulting in the sulphur taste. When we were on the trail, we passed
through Pueblano on two consecutive days - the first day the pump water
tasted great, and the next day it tasted like sulphur (the staff said
the purification mechanism had malfunctioned). And I agree, no amount
of Gatorade can mask the taste. Additionally, one taste of the sulphur
water will made water treated with Polar Pure taste great.

We were using the pump in the front of the lodge, too. Apparently,
they had
some problem because they were heavily marketing the "sweetness" of
the
water.

The
sulfur taste is so extreme it is practically undrinkable. If you are
going
through that camp, treat it as a dry camp and only drink that stuff as
a
last resort! You could smell the water a mile away and no amount of
Gatorade could cover it up."

I've been through Hunting Lodge twice (1998 and 2004) and the water was
fine
both times. Did anyone else have Joe's experience? The pump I used was
the
one out the front door of the Lodge to the left about 100 feet. I've
never
camped at HL. Is there a water source in the tenting area that's not
so
good?
