A funny PolarPure story. Our guys went to Philmont in 2002 and got
indoctrinated into PolarPure as part of the "Philmont Way". We brought
some vitamin C to cut the iodine out, but by the end of the trek, most of
us were drinking the water without trying to mask the iodine taste. In
2003, we went to Boundary Waters and brought water filters. I tossed in my
personal PolarPure almost as an afterthought. Once we got to Boundary
Waters and boys tried to pump the water, they found the pumps clogged (with
all the algae, I guess) every 3-4 liters of water. Sooo, pumping took a
long while and was a hassle. Not being a very patient person, I just
treated my water with PolarPure and moved on. Word got around and all of
them being basically "lazy" teenagers, decided the PolarPure was much less
hassle. By the end of the canoe trip, only 1 kid was routinely pumping.
The other seven of us were sharing one bottle of PolarPure (which was being
used and recharged every hour, like clockwork).
To this date, my son and his two best Scout buddies actually talk about
PolarPure as reminding them of the fun they have had doing high adventure
activities with Scouts. Kind of like the smell of homemade oatmeal raisin
cookies bringing me a flashback to my Grandma's kitchen when I was a
kid.....
So when it came time to pack for Philmont this year, the pump stayed home
and my Polar Pure went into my pack. I guess I figure the iodine taste is
just "part of the experience".......
YIS.

The only down-sides that I see with the MIOX is that
1. Its an electronic device and consumes batteries (I've not found that
battery life is a problem but I do worry about failure of the device).
Polar Pure, short of breaking the bottle is pretty reliable.
2. The MIOX wait time for cryptosporidium(sp?) is 4 hours. Crypto is
readily filtered (but not Polar Pured). Does anyone know if crypto is a
concern at Philmont?
Otherwise, I've been very satisfied with my MIOX experience.
