RE: [Philmont] - Hunting Lodge Water

Stayed at Hunting Lodge in 2001 and passed through in 2003. I thought the
water there was fine. My guess is that the day Joe was there it had been
dosed with a little too much chlorine.

Best water I ever had a Philmont was at Ute Gulch Commissary. In 2001 we
had to go from Turkey Creek camp to Hunting Lodge via Ute Gulch, a total of
nearly 15 miles. We got water at Vaca camp in route which is the nastiest
tasting water I have ever had a Philmont. By the time we got to Ute Gulch
that day we were hot, tired, and thirsty. The water there was cool and
delicious. I think I guzzled about 2 quarts right then.

Someone once posted a "you know you have been to Philmont if..." list. They
can add "you know you have been to Philmont if one way you rate camps is by
the taste of their water".

"Word of warning: The "advertising" about great-tasting, sweet, delicious,
etc. water at Hunting Lodge is, well, just say truth in advertising does not
exist there. Don't drink that water (even though it is purified)! The
sulfur taste is so extreme it is practically undrinkable. If you are going
through that camp, treat it as a dry camp and only drink that stuff as a
last resort! You could smell the water a mile away and no amount of
Gatorade could cover it up."
