Let me put my plug in for Albuquerque! Having gone through Denver, Colorado
Springs and ABQ, I heartily endorse the New Mexico route to Philmont. It is
less crowded, the airport is easier to deal with, the towns and sightseeing are
comparable to the Colorado experience. You can go river rafting, see cliff
dwellings, ride cable cars to mountain tops, see the history on the nuclear
bomb, get good eats, and lots more!
I have arranged my own tours and taken prearranged tours. I heartily recommend
the tour guide route. We too used Blue Sky Adventures and could not have been
happier. The company is run by a scouter and his wife so they know Philmont,
the Scout method and more importantly what teenage boys want and need. They
provide the transportation, hotels , food, tours, a guide and more. When we
went sightseeing the tour guide would say something like, We’ll be back in 20
minutes. If you want more time we can arrange it. Well they were on time, back
in 20 minutes and more times than naught knew exactly how long what they took
you too would keep the attention of the scouts.
Its about 3 hours from ABQ to Cimmarron, two hours from Taos, so its as close or
closer than coming from Colorado. We happened to use Blue Sky to go to Double H
in SW NM, but also on our sightseeing went to Cimarron and spent the night at
Philmont.
Enjoy! You can certainly contact me for more info
