Dan: Unless you're really set on touring the AF Academy and seeing Pikes Peak, Albuquerque offers a tremendous number of options. This July, we flew into Albuquerque on Southwest from Baltimore. Aside from a hassle with the airline about Coleman Expedition stove heads (no cannisters) (only on the return leg - go figure), we had no problems and got a good group rate through a travel agent.
Once there, we used the services of a full-service outfitter: Blue Sky Adventures (www.blueskyadventures.net) out of South Florida. Run by Mike Pardue, a long-time Scoutmaster, they provided an action packed two-day tour to acclimatize us East Coasters to the high altitude. They put us up in a first-class Wyndham hotel (two per room for our crew of 12.) We toured Albuquerque and Santa Fe, the Sandia Peak Tram, Bandelier National Monument, and went whitewater kayaking on the Rio Grande. Each day was filled with action from 06:30 AM - 8:00 PM and they can tailor an adventure for your crew (like horseback rides instead of whitewater.) All fees, hotel costs, meals, and tips were covered, including friendly, knowledgeable (and fun) guides-drivers to/from Philmont. This was a mini-vacation before our Philmont expedition, worth every penny (less than our BSA Council Contingent paid to sleep on gym floors!).and the Advisors didn't have to do anything but relax and enjoy it!
