One of the biggest challenges we faced was scheduling of pre-trek activities
around other crew commitments.. Between normal High School studies and
end-of-the-year events, we had to juggle Lacrosse (2 different teams), Band,
Tennis and church functions, not to mention other Troop activities,
calendars got crowded quickly. I think we did the best we could but it was
rare to have the whole crew present for any pre-trek activity.
Stuff we did right.....
Held a predictable, a once-a-month parent & crew meeting to get everyone
synced up for each month turned well.
Use of email (parents tended to check it much more reliably than the Scouts)
for a redundant information stream.
Scheduled around as many conflicts as possible, but held to monthly crew
outings for 7 months prior to our trek.
Kept parents and crew informed on any calendar changes with as much advance
notice as possible.
Happy Trails,
CR
BTW, Coop's guide was a great help in educating me.

Cooper,
Would you e-mail me please about getting one of your $10 Philmont guides? I
would appreciate it very much.
BTW, to the rest of the group, our crew is planning it's first crew/parent
meeting in October. For the most part, we'll be following the "Philmont
Parent's Rally" program discussing lots of the information given us from the
Council, as well as sharing much of the information gathered to date in this
forum. If anyone has something to offer, I'll gladly accept it.

that "keeps you as dry on the inside as it does on the outside". Now taking
my tongue out of my cheek.

rain jacket serves as the outer layer of your basic layering system of
polypro, fleece and wind/rain proof layer. It has been years since Philmont
included a poncho on the individual gear list and for good reason. If you
are wet AND cold, there really isn't any quick and easy way to get you dry
and warm.
