Actually, their ego little nothing to do with it - even if they want to leave the trail, Philmont will do everything it can to keep them on the trail.

Echoing a theme in other posts, just as important as the physical preparation is instilling the "its a crew, not a group of individuals" mindset. For instance, at the training weekend for our sixteen council crews, one point that we stress is "hiking is a team sport." There are a number of techniques involved with that to uphold the principle that the crew always stays together - no jackrabbits way out in front or stragglers way behind. If the crew can't stay together, they probably have other issues as well.
