Comment...
Was on the telephone with Ryan King at Philmont this
afternoon going over a
couple last minute details on our Autumn Adventure
trek next week. He told
me our crew will be using the Micropur tablets rather
than Polar Pure.>>
Philmont have been working this for several years. Sort of a "continuous improvment" type thing. The PhilAdmin I talked in 2002 told me he was not so much concerned with the use of Polar Pure by those on trek as he was by those who used it every day all summer long. In particular the Rangers tended to use it more than any other staff.
They had nothing to base their concerns on at that time other than simple caution, but were studying alternatives at that time.
Evidently an effective alternate has become available.
The main concern with using chlorine for water purification is it's reaction organic matter in the water. I'll not go into the biochemistry of this as it is rather complex, but this is the reason Polar Pure was the system of choice.
I haven't looked into these new tablets, but maybe this avoids the problem of chlorine and organics. I don't know.
For those who don't like the "iodine taste" it surely will be at least a change.
Now you can add coolaid or whatever to camouflage the Clorox taste!
