I have had very similar experiences with Sierra backpacking, where the altitude tends to amplify physical characteristics. Also, on Philmont treks, though we carry much more gear at Philmont than we do in "real-life". Size matters, but only to a point. After that limit (say, 64" and 90 lbs. or so), you have to conduct shakedown hikes to find the true capabilities of a youth. We had three boys just over 115 lbs last month on Trek 24, and they all ripped up the trail.
