Since John would like to put together a contingent using "old stuff," here's
a list of equipment that Philmont recommended to bring in 1956 - three years
before John did his trek as a youth. It is taken from a pamphlet entitled
Exploring Philmont, Information for all Explorers and Advisors. This pamphlet was
the equivalent of today's Philmont Guide to Adventure.

Personal Equipment Required

    2 T shirts 1 Jacket
2 Underwear shorts 1 Ground cloth
    4 Handkerchiefs 1 Flashlight
    2 Towels 1 Pocket knife
4 Pairs wool socks (2 pairs cotton if desired)
    1 Pair hiking shoes
    1 Poncho or raincoat
1 Sleeping bag or 3 wool blankets
1 Mess kit with eating utensils
1 Toilet kit (soap, tooth brush, etc.)
1 Shaving kit (no electric razor)
    1 Pack or pack board
    1 Explorer uniform
    1 Philmont trail uniform
25 Feet heavy string or light cord

Personal Equipment Optional

1 Pair moccasins or sneakers (for camp wear)
    1 Canteen

    1 Notebook and pencil
    1 Air Mattress

Crew Equipment

A limited number of the items listed below may be rented from the
quartermaster's store at the three base camps.

Pack board, 50 cents per trip

Trail tents will be issued without extra charge by base camp quartermasters.

PS I am presently toying around with putting together a contingent using
"old stuff" from way back when and doing it the old fashioned way. It will
probably have to be in the fall on an adults only trek because I don't think
"modern man" read, youth between the ages of 14 and 18 would buy in to that. But it
would be fun to do.

The gear list starts:
Poncho
Yucca Pack tied to a molded plywood GI packboard or
Trapper Nelson pack frame
Canvas sleeping bag
Offician BSA trail tarp for tent modified with screen to meet Philmont
"enclosure"
requirements
G I Surplus metal canteens
Official BSA cook kit
Official BSA flashlight
Official BSA first aid kit
Three pairs all wool athletic socks
etc, etc
