I still have my little PhilPamphlet from 1959 which has the same list of stuff to take as the 1956 list except they left off the hand axe.

Keep in mine Trail Tents were the official BSA trail tarp, a flat, square of canvas wiht about a dozen tie tapes scattered about.

Canteent optional....well, somewhere between 1956 and 1959 they went from sort of hanging around from camp to camp spaced pretty close to some real hiking. Not yet backpacking, but hiking from camp to camp.

Consider 1959 the 10 day trail measured a little shy of 50 miles. 2002, the same trek or very close measured 65 miles.

Dacron 88, the wonder fabric. I borrowed my brothers dac bag because it was lighter than my canvas down filled bag.

We both at 57 and 59 still have and use both bags that our dad gave us when each of us got into Scouts 46 and48 years ago respectively.

Good gear lasts, buy it and use it.

Afreiend was a Ranger in 1960 and still has his ranger axr, a 3/4 Plumb Explorer axe wiht the PhilBrand etched in the steel.

He said "you should have seen the expression on our Rangers face in 2000 when I told him I WAS TAKING my Ranger axe on the trail. He did and throughly enjoyed it's comfort.

Of course the first year as a Ranger about 1964 or 65 he used it for weeks on end clearing trails after the flood in and around Fish Camp.

And yeah, we did drink water right from the streams AFTER dropping in a couple of Halazone tablets and waiting the requisite time. Some trail camps did have treated water even back then. Some also had firewood fired hot showers. The trick was to follow a gung ho crew and benefit from all the heat they produced wiht the wood they gathered/chopped.

Ahhhhhhhh! Hot showers on the trail!
