John: Thank you for sharing something a lot of us feel, a lasting part of the "Philmont Magic." I was talking to my son (our crew chief this summer, now away in college) both agreeing with your PhilMoments.
We were struck by the same idea. Wouldn't it be great for all of us who WTGBTP (and reminisce about it frequently) if the PhilStaff would install Web Cams at a few key locations that could support Internet connections? This could be done very unobtrusively, so as not to in any way spoil the surroundings with something out of place as "high tech" (no more than the solar panels and radio repeater antennas as some of the staffed camps.) It would let us who love the place check-in live on Beaubein, Cito, Cyphers, or even Basecamp whenever we wanted.
Maybe someone has done this already. If not, surely this would be a snap for some of those staffers majoring in electrical engineering or computer science.
Is anyone aware of existing Philmont Web Cams or willing to surface the issue at the Ranch? Is this too out of line with the back-to-the-basics philosophy of Philmont?

Subject: [Philmont]: PhilMoment this morning
Was reading my email this evening when my 18 year old daughter came in to show me a collage she made. In the center of it is a picture of the three girls on the 2002 PhilTrek which included Lauren, now a college junior and two year PhilStaff, Allison, my H S senior and Kirsten, our Philmont Resident friend (Mark Anderson's daughter).
The Picture is the three girls in identical class A dark green Venturer uniforma sporting their arrowhead post trek and B-I-G we made it smiles.
Allison then volunteered that this morning at early band practice she had a PhilMoment.
She said they were outside a little before sunrise (7:10) ready to start marching practice (she is s twirler) when she looked at the beautiful pink sunrise. Looking at it and a particular smell in the air took her back to Philmont in a flash. Said she wanted to be at Philmont instead of marching practice.
Well, this isn't so unusual.
What's unusual is that about the same time on the same day, I was having my own PhilMoment.
I got to work a little early, so I decided to take a little walk in the field behind the office and watch the grass grow while the sun came up.. Was walking through some thin spindly grass about a foot high that was thinned considerably due to 6 weeks without rain and looking at a beautiful red sunrise and thought the exact same thing....I'd rather be at Philmont.
So there you have it, a dad and daughter, both PhilTrail veterans, at their respective morning places fifteen miles apart at the same time both having PhilMoments at the same time.
There is just something magic about Philmont don't you agree?
Well, we are no longer in a 6 week dry spell. Hurricane Ivan returned to the Texas Gulf
Coast as T D Ivan and is currently camped out above our house dumping about 1-1/2 inches of rain per hour. A little lightning but not much wind. Ivan is in it's 21 day of activity since it formed.
We needed the rain.
Take care.
