I unreservedly cast my "Amen" to Bob's message RE 3 types of Advisors.
I was our council's 48-trekker contingent advisor this past summer, and
was also a Phirst-time Philmonter. However, I was blessed to have 4
GREAT crew advisors, who made sure every adult in their crew was as
ready to go as the kids. My personal challenge to everyone in our
contingent was to "TRAIN FOR DAY 11, NOT DAY 1." One crew had a couple
of issues with adults with knee problems, but it didn't limit the trek
in any appreciable way for that crew and every single member of our
contingent completed the treks with no days off the trail for any
reason.
I give the credit for that accomplishment to the vast amount of
information, cautions, advice and even dire warnings of the many
Phil-vets gracious enough to share their experiences. Why any adult
with half a brain would not heed these warnings and listen to this
advice is simply beyond me.
Thanks to everyone who participated in this web-ring, thanks to Coop and
Wally, thanks to the guy from the troop in Texas we hiked the AT with
last summer who spent countless hours every night being probed and
interrogated by me and my buddy with our Phil-questions, thanks to all
of you who keep giving great advice and discussion material for those
getting ready to go.
BTW, contact Camp Davy Crockett, Sequoyah Council (on the VA-TN border)
and ask about their Appalachian Trail High Adventure program. A GREAT
prep experience for us 12 months out from Philmont, a good wake-up call,
and it's an awesome stretch of trail. Angie at 423-952-6961 can tell
you all about it. Or e-mail me.
